Islam Makhachev is a Russian mixed martial artist who has achieved high awards in the sport.

As a child, he attended taekwondo and wushu sanda classes. He successfully competed in amateur wushu tournaments, but was forced to quit training when his family moved. He then spent two years seriously playing football and a year practicing freestyle wrestling.
